Fuse Me In’s Responsibilities

Fuse Me In will provide clinical/clerkship rotations that allow for learning experiences and environments based on current medical research and training.

Student Responsibilities and Duties

As a student member of Fuse Me In, you are not a licensed physician; therefore, he/she is legally, and ethically not permitted to practice medicine, or assume responsibility for patient care. Students may be involved in assisting in the care of a patient, but only under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. The Preceptor is responsible for the medical care of the patient and for the content and countersigning of all orders, progress notes, and other notes written by the student. Students may not administer therapy or perform procedures, except under the direct supervision of a licensed physician to whom he/she has been formally assigned by Fuse Me In.

To be eligible for any rotation or clinical experience, students must have received HIPAA training and completed a background check(s). Furthermore, all Fuse Me In students must have health insurance, all required immunizations, related testing and any other required documents which are subject to change at any time. Documentation of this information must be kept current and on file with Fuse Me In prior to beginning clinical rotations. Based on the requirement of the training institution or site, students are also required to undergo additional background checks or drug screening prior to beginning a rotation. Failure to comply with providing this information or the deadlines set forth by Fuse Me In may result in delaying or canceling the rotation(s), as well as disciplinary action.

While on rotation students will be responsible, at all times, to the personnel in charge of the unit involved. In addition, students will be expected to comply with the general rules and medical ethics established by the hospital, clinic, or facilities at which he/she is being trained. Appropriate professional appearance and conduct is expected at all times. All problems or difficulties should be communicated immediately to the Fuse Me In Office of Student Clinical Affairs. Students must attend all assigned clinical site conferences, meetings, lectures, and other educational programs at or near the rotation site. Any determinations for exemption must be made by the Preceptor. A schedule of the site’s educational programs may be obtained from the Preceptor.

Fuse Me In does not own or operate affiliated teaching hospitals. The hospitals are owned by public or private corporations. As a courtesy and advancement of public health and welfare, the hospitals allow medical students to train in their institutions. Many physician instructors are volunteer faculty.

Students are guests and should conduct themselves as courteous, responsible medical professionals at all times. Demonstration of dignity, respect, and gratitude along with ethical and professional behavior are expected of all students. Students are not to submit for publication any material relating to the clinical education experience without prior written approval from the affiliated Preceptor, Hospital and Fuse Me In Office of Student Clinical Affairs.

Absence from Rotation

The focus of the clinical experience is patient care. 100% attendance is, therefore, required to be certain that continuity of care is maintained. It is understood that certain situations may arise that will result in absence from required daily participation. In such instances the following policies will be observed:

  • All absences are subject to approval by the Preceptor at their discretion.
  • In the case of an emergency, the student must immediately notify their Preceptor upon learning that an absence will occur or has occurred.
  • Poor attendance, repeated tardiness, unapproved absence(s) or absence in excess of 3 days may result in a grade of incomplete and the student may be required to repeat the entire rotation with additional fees.
  • Failure to immediately notify the Preceptor of any absence will be considered neglect of duty and may result in a failing grade for the rotation.
  • Time spent away from the rotation site during regular duty hours for lectures, conferences and other programs conducted at outside hospitals or universities must be approved, in advance, by the student’s Preceptor.
Hours of Duty

The average workday will be determined by the Preceptor’s schedule, including office hours, hospital rounds, clinic or nursing home visits and call-schedule. Students shall be assigned activities on, or related to, their current service rotation only. A physician and preceptors licensed to practice medicine in that state will supervise any duties assigned to students.

Whether students receive a holiday off is determined by the assigned Preceptor. Fuse Me In does not exempt students from working on holidays. The on-site Preceptor determines the needs for educational continuity and patient care.

Payment Responsibilities

Clinical/clerkship rotations with Fuse Me In are in high demand and fill up quickly. You may cancel your rotation at any time, however, these guidelines apply:

  1. There are absolutely NO REFUNDS once preceptor information is released. Preceptor information will be released once the invoice deposit is paid or the invoice is paid in full.
  2. Once deposit is made, all remaining invoice fees are due per the dates listed on your invoice.
  3. If payment is not received by the date indicated on your invoice, you will be removed from the rotation until full payment is received.
  4. In the instance the student is a "no show", the full amount remains due for the rotation.
Other Responsibilities

  • The student must provide Fuse Me In with all necessary evaluations and recommendation requests two weeks prior to the ending of their rotation date.
  • The student must be punctual when reporting to the Preceptor’s office.
  • The student should bring a copy of the core curriculum, personal medical equipment (i.e., stethoscope) and any other notes/materials he/she feels would be useful
  • Smartphones may only be used after receiving positive permission by the student’s Preceptor. Use of a smartphone is strictly limited to work directly associated with the rotation.
  • The student must be aware of and follow all office protocol, including how the Preceptor would like the student to be introduced to the patients (i.e., the student introduces self or the Preceptor introduces the student). Some offices may have limited or no space available for storing belongings.
  • The student must be prepared for the rotation every day. Students are encouraged to read information relevant to the subject of the rotation at least two hours each day.Whenever possible, he/she should read about patient cases that will be seen in the office or hospital.
You MUST!

  1. Wear a clean short white lab coat ALL the time unless directly told not to do so. You are expected to wear clean shoes.
  2. If the hospital or clinic provides I.D. you must always wear it. Do not place any stickers or damage it in any way. You must return it on your last day of rotation if that is hospital policy.
  3. If you do not understand something ASK! If you do not ask you will not learn.
  4. Never wear inappropriate clothes such as mid-rising shirts, low cut skirts (skirts must be below the knee), shorts, flip flops, or open toe shoes. Men must wear shirts and dress pants unless otherwise deemed appropriate.
  5. Exercise common sense. Knock on patient’s doors before entering. Close doors behind you so as not to expose patients even when the patient is fully dressed.
  6. Always introduce yourself as a medical student. Always state the name of your preceptor. Example: “Hello, Mrs. Hollings, my name is X, I am the medical student of Dr. Tweedy”.
  7. If we are notified of any inappropriate behavior you will be notified by Fuse Me In. Not attending a rotation without a doctor’s note, going in late and leaving early will get you removed from the rotation. When you are removed from the rotation you will be issued an “F” for that rotation.
  8. Know your place: you are a learner. Do not get involved in hospital or clinic politics or gossip. It will only get you removed from the site. Every hospital and clinic has problems; they are not your problems! You are there to learn.
  9. Under no circumstances are you allowed to swear/curse/use profanity/ be under the influence of any illegal substance(s) on or near hospital or clinic property. If we are informed of such behavior, you will be removed immediately, fail current rotation, and be disqualified from doing any more rotations with Fuse Me In.
  10. Studying for a USMLE, nursing boards or any other examinations does not mean you can take time off from a rotation that you are scheduled to do. Anytime off should be approved first by the preceptor.
  11. If any sharp object sticks you, inform your preceptor immediately. It is your job to report this and make sure your health is not compromised.
  12. Exercise common sense. If you wouldn’t want it done to you, don’t do it to others.
